Dementia Friends Information Evening
Alzheimer’s Society and Dementia Friendly Communities.
You may think “what’s this got to do with the Horticultural Society?”
Nearly 9,000 people are living with dementia in Worcestershire, and around 850,000 in the UK nationally, with 1/3 of the population knowing someone affected by dementia.
These numbers are predicted to rise so that’s why it’s important that we take action now to support anyone affected by dementia, including their carers, to live well in their local community. The Alzheimer’s Society is working with local businesses, clubs and organisations in Kidderminster and neighbouring towns in the Wyre Forest to:
Raise awareness and understanding of dementia
To see how we can make our local environment more dementia friendly (so a nicer area for everyone)
Enable people to continue to shop, socialise and use local transport
Promote our towns and villages as places where people with dementia are understood, respected and supported to be part of community life.
The Committee of Kidderminster Horticultural Society fully supports this initiative and recognises how important it is to raise awareness and understanding of dementia and KHS will be hosting a Dementia Friends Information session for KHS members, and non members on: Friday April 28th 2017 at 7.30 pm in the Holy Innocents Community Hall, Stourport Road, Kidderminster.
Dementia Friends is a social action movement run by the Alzheimer’s Society that aims to provide an understanding of dementia and examples of some of the day to day things we can all do to support those living with dementia, whether they are family members, friends or neighbours. The session will last about 1 hour, tea and coffee will be provided (and afterwards there will be an opportunity to find out more about support, services and information that is available locally).
We hope that you will be able to join us. For further information, please contact Viv Farrell on 01905 621868 (Alzheimer’s Society’s Worcestershire Office) or email vivien.farrell@alzheimers.org.uk or David West , KHS Vice Chair on 01562 752051 or davidwest352@talktalk.net
